Dracula hirsuta is a fascinating botanical orchid native to the humid mountain forests of South America. It is particularly appreciated for its extraordinary flowers, characterised by their triangular shape, elongated sepal tails, and fine hairs covering parts of the floral surface. The blooms display attractive shades of cream, yellow, and reddish-brown, often enhanced by intricate contrasting markings.
This species thrives in cool to intermediate temperatures, shaded conditions, high humidity, and excellent air circulation. The growing medium should remain consistently moist without becoming waterlogged, while direct sunlight and prolonged high temperatures should be avoided.
As with many Dracula species, its flower spikes may develop downwards, making containers that allow the inflorescences to emerge freely particularly suitable.
With its unusual hairy flowers and fascinating botanical characteristics, Dracula hirsuta is a distinctive addition to any collection of rare and unusual orchids.
